Question of the Day

In Breaking Dawn, Bella would rather die than lose her baby. Do you think this is a realistic portrayal of the bond a pregnant woman feels with her fetus?

17 enjoyed the bouquet.:

I have never been pregnant, so I can only speculate.

I am sure a mother would do anything to keep their baby alive. I think it is a hard question to answer though, and it probably depends on the person.

Whew. Heavy question! I think it is so, so dependent on the person. There are obviously unwanted/unintended pregnancies out there, so that answers part of the question.

I think, though, that despite that, there is a bond no matter what. I think it'd be very hard to feel nothing at all, despite what the circumstances were.

This is really personal, being pregnant and all, but while I feel bonded to and love my baby, I don't feel as close as I thought I would. I don't know if that happens later in the pregnancy, when I am showing and can feel the baby move, or when the baby is born and I can see him/her? It's just been the past few weeks that I've started to feel more like a pregnant woman and less like a sick woman, so maybe that has something to do with it. But nothing (so far) has beat the ultrasound and getting to hear the heartbeat.

So, to answer the question, I think it's realistic in a lot of senses. Just depends on who the pregnant lady is.

Well...Being as I'm pregnant for the 3rd (and Final) time! I truly believe that has been the case for me! However like Erin said I think it depends on the circumstances revolving around the pregnancy. All of mine have been wanted and PLANNED pregnancies. With my second I was put on high risk and let me tell you if it had come between the baby and my life it would have been Piper HANDS DOWN! (can't imagine the world with out her OR Hallie's Laugh)

Every woman is different, I feel this way from the get go, others not until the baby moves and so on!
(As baby number 3 starts kicking me in the ribs! HAHA!)

So for me...the answer is yes, However I agree with Erin that it truly depends on each individual!

True -- I guess I could have phrased it as "Would YOU die for your fetus?"

The fact that Bella decides immediately is very honorable. I'm not sure I could make that decision without days of agony. Even then, I'm not sure I could chose the fetus over myself.

And I'm pregnant right now. So it's not like it isn't REAL to me.

To answer your question, Erin, I'm not sure you feel that super total close bond with your baby until after it's born. And even then it takes time. I thought Finn was cute and instinct would have kept me from letting harm come to him -- but that total lovely feeling took time.

lovely = lovey.

Heatheruth - we were posting at the same time! When are you due? I keep thinking I'm going to have to go through Heatheruth withdrawal when you have that baby.

Ok...so if the question is "would YOU die for your FETUS?" Here's my answer....If I had the choice...yes....if it was made for in some emergency circumstance that they terminated it without my knowing that would be something I would have to deal with...but if the choice was brought to me...you or the baby...I'd chose the baby!

Kari said...

I guess it also depends how far along I was too.

hehe! I'm at 34 weeks...so 6 more weeks to go! (due date is Sept. 24th)! I'm on the HOME STRETCH! hehe! Boy is life gonna be crazy haha! Oh well at least my oldest starts Preschool so that will help to not have THREE running around the house ALL DAY!

heatheryruth said...

Very true Kari...if I was only like 5 weeks along (in human gestation...not Vampire!) I would choose to terminate it! However it there was a chance it could survive outside the womb, then I would choose the baby!

Kari said...

Ah, you're so close! You'll have to let us know when you have the baby! Do you know if you're having a boy or a girl?

Finn starts preschool in September too. I'm so excited. I'll get 4 months of Mon & Wed mornings to myself. Glorious!

The ultrasound tech was 90% sure it's another girl! (that makes 3). So of course my hubby is holding out hope that she's wrong and it's a boy! I have ideas for names...but I'm not allowed to discuss them until the baby comes! hehe!

Hallie's preschool starts out every other day...but then by the end of Sept. she starts going everyday! (We live in WI and the school district we're in the preschool is PART of the regular school program!) so my baby is starting school this year!! *tear* I'm excited for her...but as a mom I'm a little sad...that's usually where kids first learn that not EVERYONE loves them! (being a teacher and all I know this!) Ok enough with my hormonal blubbering! hehe!

Having never been pregnant, I don't know about the bond between and mother and her baby. I am pretty sure I would not feel that close to it until I gave birth.

As for me dying for my fetus, my answer is no. I couldn't imagine leaving Jeremy a widower with a newborn to take care of, or my baby growing up without it's mother.

ditto what ryah said.

No idea, I'm 12. Give us updates when he/she is named (erin, kari, heatheryruth).

That's all I have to say on the subject. Hmmm... I should get my mom to answer the question, I'm the oldest of three. I'm 12, O~Z is 9 and E~Z is 6.

Well this is a very hard question. I have never been pregnant either, and to be honest the thought of pregnancy has always terrified me. But if I was pregnant, I think it would really depend on the situation. I agree with Ryah, too.

However, I do think Bella's bond with her fetus is realistic in some ways. If I was pregnant with Edward's/the love of my life's baby, I might feel as strongly as Bella. Also, her pregnancy was accelerated, so she might have bonded more quickly because the baby had already grown so much.

I'd say that it is fairly realistic when it comes to Bella. I mean, we all know she's insane and goes to extremes more often than not. At least where Edward is concerned. And she wanted the baby mainly because she thought it would resemble Edward. So the answer here is yes. Of course, I've never been pregnant, so I may be wrong.

I am not sure I can answer this question- but I can say that I am always frusterated with movies and books where the mother is willing to die- while leaving her husband and other children alone....
