Question of the Day

I am sure we all remember our "first love" --that person that we would do anything for, would die without, would never stop loving... Bella and Edward have an immediate and strong attraction to each other. (Not necessarily a positive attraction, but they both are quite absorbed by the other at first). Do you believe in love at first sight? Is there some kind of destiny at work here or is this an intense version of first love? Or first lust? Do you think this would have happened if Edward weren't a vampire and Bella didn't smell so damn good?

Discuss. I expect fully formed opinions and back and forth banter.

8 enjoyed the bouquet.:

This is an awesome question, Alison.

I personally don't believe in love at first sight, but I do believe you're naturally drawn to certain people. When I met Matt (who, since he was really my first boyfriend, is the only one I've ever "loved"), it wasn't love at first sight, but I was oddly drawn to him. Like, I was kind of embarrassed to look him in the eye because I liked him too much already. And we were friends immediately. But it's different for everyone.

I do think that first love (or even first infatuation) is really strong, though. And I'd like to think that Edward and Bella would still be in love despite the whole vampire/bloodlust thing...he seems so entralled with what she's thinking and how she responds to things. And she's kind of an old soul, which I think he'd be even if he weren't 108 or however old he is.

But if Edward weren't a vampire, then he wouldn't be as interested in Bella's thoughts, either. He only is curious about her because he can't read her mind.

I'm just sayin..

I believe in first-attraction -- not first love. Love takes time. I do believe in soul mates, however. I don't necessarily think we only have ONE person designed for us, instead a couple people that you can truly be happy with.

I think Bella and Edward are soul mates; vampire or not.

I agree, Alison, that Edward probably wouldn't be as interested in Bella's thoughts. Although I think Edward would have been very perceptive and able to read people when he was human (hence the superpower as a vampire), but he still would have been intrigued by Bella? Or just wishful thinking?

And Kari, I think they are soul mates too. If vampires could imprint (and they kind of do, since they are so concrete in their changes), Edward imprinted on Bella.

I agree with Alison as well. I don't think edward would be as into Bella if he weren't a vampire. However, he also says how she doesn't see herself correctly- which means that he must think she is pretty nice to look at.

I do believe in Love at first sight. I really do- i have had a couple expiriences (one with a guy, and another with a baby) I remember looking into my god-daughters eyes and having this intense feeling that i had known her forever, and this immense feeling of love for her. I also do think I felt love at first sight with my ex. I actually claimed him the night I met him to my girlfriend Christine.

getting back to Bella and Edward- i hate to admit this, but I sometimes have a hard time with understanding why Edward is so infactuated with her... is it just that he can't hear/read her?
I kinda feel like I don't know her personality really. other than being a klutz... I kinda find her boring.

I don't believe in love at first sight, but I do think like/lust at first sight is totally true. I really liked Jeremy when I first met him, but it was more because he was, cute, nice, seemed into me, etc...

I don't think Edward and Bella would be so infatuated with each other if Edward was human. He was drawn to her scent and unable to read her mind, so of course he was curious. She was drawn to his beauty, mystery, as well as his scent, like the way a fly is drawn to a venus flytrap. I think maybe they would have eventually been together, but the pull wouldn't have been so strong.

I think Edward and Bella totally had lust at first sight, not love.

I don't think that I believe in love at first sight. I don't believe in destiny either, I think it's attraction that led to a relationship that they have decided to commit to.

I find it hard to speculate whether or not Bella and Edward would be together if he wasn't a vampire (I mean in the practical sense, they never would have met if he weren't a vampire. He'd have been long dead). But mostly I feel like it's BECAUSE he's a vampire they are together. Not necessarily because of Bella's scent, but more because he saw something in her completely extraordinary--unable to read, not conforming to norms, not buying into the fear. And she was attracted to something she couldn't have, his mystery and his hottness.
