The cover.

SM: "So this cover has kind of two things going on. One is a metaphor for the entire series because you have Bella going from being the weakest player on the board to being the most powerful one. So that’s the main meaning, that’s what I wanted to have on there. Then I also the feeling of a chess game because I knew that the end of the story was not going to be a great big huge battle scene. This was a court scene. This was maneuvering and having your plans and I thought that was really suited to chess so that was another reason I like that metaphor."

Want to know a bit of what Stephanie was thinking this whole time?? Now we know, click here for the Q&A from last night's event in Chicago!

6 enjoyed the bouquet.:

I kinda like that it's Bella's two selves. We were right that it's about the Volturi too.

I like this explanation.

I have never liked chess, but understand where she is coming from with the cover. Too bad, in my opinion, I didn't think the "maneuvering" she was describing was awesome or tense at all.

I took the cover to mean (prior to S.M.'s clarification) to be Bella's Change (Yay I was right there!) As well as Bella protecting Renesmee! (So I got that one wrong!) I do agree that the Big Showdown wasn't all that big...but then again...in chess it very rarely is! It's a game of strategy rather than "fighting" hence why I REALLY suck at chess! HAHA!

It made sense in setting up strategy of how they'd outsmart or over take the Volturi. Bella being defense, Edward being the voice of reason and Alice with her setting things in motion for a few possible outcomes and making her play at the right moment. I like the metaphor a lot.
